How do I order a cake?

Simple! Just email us (you can do it right from this website) or give us a call at least 48 hours before you need the cake (the more notice the better, especially if it’s a special creation). We need to know things like the date you’d like to pick up the cake (or have it delivered), the flavour (see our cake page), how many you’d like to feed, the colours you’d prefer and anything else that will help us create a cake that’s uniquely you!

How much notice do you need for orders?

We always prefer to know as far in advance as possible. For wedding cakes, it’s imperative that we save your date and, typically, we book from two months to a year (or longer) in advance.

For Chocolatey-dipped fruit trays, we require a minimum 24 hours notice (we actually buy the fruit fresh!).

For regular cakes and baked goods, 48 hours notice is, generally, sufficient but - like we said above - the more advance notice the better. Obviously, for large orders, custom designs and special products, this is super important.

Why should I come for a wedding cake consultation?

Life is pretty hectic these days. Trust us – it gets a little crazy in our kitchens, especially at the end of the week. So, we know it can be hard to find the time to visit our store for a personal consultation. But, honestly, it’s the best way to ensure you’ll get the cake of your dreams on your big day, not something that looks like a generic, cookie-cutter cake that definitely does NOT reflect you.

If you’re a bride-to-be, having Sherry meet you and members of your wedding team is the best way to get to know what you really want in your custom-created cake. We don’t believe in pushing our ideas on a bride but, rather, in taking your own ideas and helping to create a wedding cake that mirrors your dreams, your hopes and your desires.

If you’d like to sample any of our cakes, please ask when you book your appointment and we’ll be happy to accommodate. There is a minimal charge (starting at just $1.00 apiece), but you’ll get to experience the real taste of our delicious cakes and icings beforehand – giving you total peace of mind with the products you’re ordering.

Of course, we realize that it’s not always practical to have a personal wedding consultation (we’ve had brides from as far away as California!), so we also make it easy to experience the joy of cake through email. We can exchange ideas, pictures and other important information, ensuring you get exactly the cake you desire. It’s the next best thing to being there in person!

How do I book a consultation?

Booking a consultation is as easy as clicking here. By contacting us early, we’ll do our best to find a convenient time to meet. Please note, drop-ins are (generally) welcome on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but consultations from Thursday to Saturday, especially during the wedding season (May-October – “crazy time”, we like to call it), must be booked in advance.

By booking in advance, we can give you our (generally) undivided attention. It’s only fair to other brides who have pre-booked and, especially, to those who are having their cakes delivered that same day.

What kind of deposit do I need to order a wedding cake?

That’s an easy one. When you book your wedding cake, we require a minimum $50.00 non-refundable deposit. As part of this deposit, your wedding date is immediately booked into our busy wedding calendar, ensuring that you’ll have a cake for your special day.

You don’t have to decide anything else at that time. If we don’t hear from you in the meantime, we’ll contact you well in advance of your wedding date to start the design of your custom wedding cake.

How many people do you have decorating wedding cakes?

One. That’s it.

I feel that it’s important for me to personally create each and every wedding cake. Although my staff are fully qualified, I take it as a point of pride to personally handle the design, decoration and delivery of each and every wedding cake that leaves my shop.

My wedding budget is really tight. How can you help me?

Let’s face it – weddings can get REALLY expensive. We believe that’s why we’re delivering to more and more home-based weddings – which, by the way, we think are awesome. What could be more special than getting married at your family home? Anyway, we digress.

The reality in today’s economy is that everyone’s trying to do more with less. This includes creating dream wedding cakes while accommodating a smaller budget. We are ready to meet this challenge by offering practical and inventive cost-saving ideas – so you never have to compromise your expectations.

It’s true – you can have your cake and eat it, too!

I saw a really cool cake design in a magazine? Can you make something like that?

Hey, don’t be fooled by our quaint rural location. We know what’s happening out in the big bad world. Just like you, we watch all those fancy schmancy cake shows on TV, so we saw what that Buddy guy did last week!

Seriously, though, the staff at Isn’t Life Sweet is constantly improving our skills and product knowledge through courses, trade shows, online videos, books and magazines, so we are always at the forefront in the cake decorating, candy making and baking industries.

If you’ve seen it, we can probably create it!

I’m having a bachelorette party and need a – hmmmmm – special cake? You know what I mean, right?

Oh, you mean a “naughty” cake? Don’t be embarrassed – we sure aren’t. People order them all the time and we’re very discrete. If you’re too shy to call about it, just pop us off an email.

But, remember, somebody still has to pick it up! No worries, though, we can cover up the cake box window so no one will ever know.

Until it’s party time, of course!

Is there anything you don’t sell or do?

Absolutely. We try to cover virtually everything to do with cakes, candies and supplies. But, sometimes we receive requests for products that are outside our area of expertise.

However, because we believe in satisfying all our customers’ needs, we actually go out of our way to recommend alternative sources for this merchandise, even if it means sending a customer to one of our competitors.

People may wonder how that benefits our business. We believe that if you are successful in searching out a product because of our help, you’ll repay us by returning to our store in the future.

Plus, if a customer buys a product at another store and happens to mention that, “Isn’t Life Sweet suggested I come here”, we feel the store will appreciate the goodwill gesture and return the favour by recommending our business in the future. (Remember “Miracle On 34th Street”? It just happens to be one of our all- time favourite movies – go figure!)

As far as things we will not DO, the list is pretty short. We’ve never been big on guns. Our children never had them (except squirt guns because, face it, they’re awesome!) and, although we understand they’re a necessity for certain people (police officers, hunters, many farmers), we won’t create gun cakes for children’s birthday parties. You can still ask. But, we’ll just say no (very politely, of course!).

Which areas do you serve? Do you deliver?

In addition to Sarnia and the local area, we are proud to have served wedding clients throughout Lambton County, as well as Kent, Oxford, Middlesex, Elgin Counties – and even further distances, if scheduling allows it. We charge a very reasonable delivery fee for wedding cakes - based on the distance from our store. If required, we can also deliver any of our other products right to your door!

As well as our local area, we’ve had our products travel across Canada, to the U.S. and even overseas. That makes us feel pretty good – and a teensy bit scared – to know that products from our little shop are jetting around the world. Fly little cake and set yourself free!

I have food allergies. Can you help?

More and more customers are requesting cakes, candies and baked goods that meet special dietary concerns. We have always been at the forefront in carrying sugar-free candies and cakes, but are continually expanding these product lines to meet with the increasing demand. These include sugar-free, vegan, nut-free, and lactose-free products. Please note, however – we are NOT a nut-free facility and, despite our best efforts, cannot guarantee that our products haven’t come in contact with nuts. Having said that, if you let us know beforehand, we will ensure that NO nut products are produced on the particular day of your order. We apologize for any inconvenience.

One thing else we should mention. Some people are reluctant to order a specialized food product because only one or two people in their party have food allergies or dietary concerns. We’ve got the perfect solution! We can create a larger cake for the majority of the group and a smaller version of the same cake to meet the needs of the guests with food allergies. Win-win!

Do you make products for large groups?

Absolutely. We’ve made cakes, favours, candies, gift baskets and more for groups of almost any size. We once made a single cake for 500 people. It was one of our more challenging deliveries. We’ve also made 400 large gift baskets for a major organization. And, of course, we’ve created wedding cakes to serve several hundred guests many, many times. As long as we have enough notice, we’re willing to take on almost any challenge.

I’m sure your cakes are great, but I prefer to bake my own? What can you do to help me?

“Do-It-Yourselfers” are a huge part of our business – and we’re always here to help you out. As you may already know, we have the area’s largest selection of cake and candy supplies. We deal with dozens of suppliers from across North America and constantly try to bring in new and innovative products, including more cake decorating supplies, books and candy making supplies.

And it doesn’t stop there. Because we do so much baking, cake decorating and candy making ourselves, we’re always willing to answer your questions and pass along some valuable pointers that will help you learn to create like a pro.

Do you teach cake decorating?

As we mentioned above, we love “do-it-yourselfers” at Isn’t Life Sweet, so cake decorating classes are a natural extension of the products we sell. We offer Wilton Certified Cake Decorating Classes to satisfy the requests from many customers who would prefer to create their own cakes rather than purchase pre-made products.

Normally, classes are held on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. To learn more, just send us an email or call us! Spaces fill up very quickly, so the earlier you book, the better the chance you’ll secure a place.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, we DO sell all the kits and supplies you’ll need to take our Wilton courses. Compare our prices! You’ll be pleasantly surprised!

How are you different from your competitors?

Two words – customer service. We have learned this directly from our customers, especially brides, who frequently tell us that our approach is totally
different from what they experience at other stores.

First, we prefer to use our customers’ ideas to create wedding and specialty cakes, rather than taking a “my way or the highway” approach. We believe that it’s important to give a customer what they really want, rather than forcing our own ideas on them. Plus, we enjoy the challenge of creating unique and original products, rather than recreating the same designs over and over.

Second, Isn’t Life Sweet is willing to take on both small and large projects. As a growing business, we don’t believe in turning down projects simply because, in the former case, there isn’t enough money to be made or, in the latter case, because the project will be too time-consuming.

Third, we search for unique solutions to meet your needs, whether that involves creating a specialty item or custom ordering a product. Although it would be easier to talk you into settling for a standard cake design or taking something off our shelf, we believe that, in the long run, it’s better to give you what you really want.

Fourth, since many special occasions are celebrated outside our normal business hours, we are willing to create and deliver products on Sundays, holidays, and after hours.

In the end, satisfying your needs is always our number one priority, no matter how we accomplish that goal.

How do you give back to your community?

We are extremely proud of the support we give to our community. We have donated cakes, candies, gift baskets, cash and gift certificates to numerous organizations, including United Way, Big Sisters, Rebound, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Autism Society, 4-H, hospital auxiliaries, school fundraisers, Lambton College, teachers’ conferences, various fall fairs (Petrolia, Plympton-Wyoming, Brooke-Alvinston, and Forest), fair ambassadors, holiday home tours, Dancing With The Stars, the Genealogy Society, Girl Guides, the Sunshine Foundation, sports clubs and tournaments, various church groups and many more.

Organizations frequently request specific items that are unique or unusual and we are always willing to accommodate their requests. This could involve the inclusion of a logo on a cake or Chocolatey favours. It could also be a themed cake to reflect the group involved, such as a specific sport or event theme. It could even be something like recreating a period-themed wedding cake for an early 1900’s stage play for the Victoria Playhouse Petrolia.

We value the support and loyalty of our customers and believe it is very important to give back to our community to show how much that support means to us. However - and this is a big however – we have seen a tremendous increase in requests for charitable donations, especially in the past few “economically-challenging” years. Therefore, we’ve found ourselves turning away some new charities and focusing our support on those who’ve counted on us in the past.

Having said that, we still invite you to call or email us with your request and, if we’re able, we’ll do our best to help.

My neighbor offered to make my wedding cake for $50.00 less than you. Can you match their price?

It’s awesome that you have such a thoughtful neighbour. Unfortunately, we don’t price match. We believe there is great value in our products and that everything we sell is competitively priced.

At Isn’t Life Sweet, we have been creating cakes for over 25 years and have had a storefront operation for more than a decade. We’re a legal business that is regularly inspected by the Lambton Health Unit, so you can be assured of the quality of our products.

Still not convinced? Well, we also custom deliver and set up your wedding cake onsite, just like we’ve been doing since 2001. We have satisfied thousands of brides and have built a reputation for consistent, creative quality.

Over the years, we have had dozens of brides who have been abandoned at the last minute by their amateur cake decorators, either because the person went out of business, realized they were in over their heads or, simply, changed their minds about doing the cake. When we make a commitment, we keep it.

Decorating a wedding cake is a complicated, skilled endeavour that takes years of training and experience to learn. We are never intimidated by professional competition - in fact, we welcome it and have good relationships with other professionals in our business.

Sorry about the rant. What we really meant to say was that we hope you’ll think carefully about the choices you make when it comes to the person you’d like to create your once-in-a-lifetime wedding cake. Whew. Glad we got that off our chests!

Why should I come to your store instead of just going to a chain store that sells some of the same products?

We can think of lots of reasons. The most important is service. We’re not going to knock any of our competitors but, frankly, our product knowledge is second-to-none. We’ve been doing this a long time. We know our products. We use them ourselves. And we can answer almost any question you can throw at us.

The second reason is selection. We carry products from many different companies, not just one or two. Because we’ve been in business for over a
decade, we stock a lot of one-of-a-kind and discontinued products you won’t find anywhere else (except, perhaps, on EBay).

The final reason is price. You didn’t expect that, did you? Honestly, if you compare, our everyday prices are almost always the same or lower than the
chain stores. True, sometimes these outlets have sales, but maybe you don’t want to wait for the next sale or maybe you’d rather just shop at one convenient location where you can get service, product knowledge, selection AND a competitive price EVERY day.

We’re your one-stop, all-in-one cake, candy and supply store. We really are.

I ordered a cake back in 1999 and wasn’t happy with it. Why would I ever order anything from you again?

Believe it or not, we get comments like this fairly often. Usually it’s at a home show. Or bridal show. Or from a friend of a friend of a former customer. And we deal with them honestly and openly.

Sherry Nixon bought Isn’t Life Sweet back in September 2001 from its previous owner. Shortly after that time, we learned (much to our disappointment) that there had been some problems in the past and not all of the former owner’s clients were always satisfied with the quality of the products they received. Please note - our intention here is NOT to besmirch the reputation of the former owner – we’re just responding to comments we still hear fairly frequently – more than ten years since we took over the store!

Although, we weren’t part of the operation back then, we do apologize if you weren’t happy with your purchases. Other than having the same business name and location, we are a completely different company. We hope you’ll give us the chance to show you how wonderful our current products are and how committed we are to giving you great service. Please come back!
